John HAGELGANS, was born July
10, 1820, on Obersuhl, in the province of Hessen, Germany. In 1843 he was united in marriage to
Elizabeth MOHR and this marriage was blessed with six children, three boys and
three girls. In 1852 the oldest daughter died, and eight days later the beloved
wife passed away. After three years Mr. HAGELGANS remarried to Elizabeth
SHAFER, and to this union three children, two boys and
one girl, were born. But this union was of short duration; after five years the
beloved wife and mother, and young son passed into eternity. In 1872 Mr.
HAGELGANS emigrated with four children to America, and
settled nearTrenton, N.J., where two of his sons were
living. Three years later he returned to Germany remaining two years. In 1877 he retumed to America and came
directly to Colon, Mich., where his children were
then living. He was baptized in the Evangelical Reformed church, of
which he was an active member while in Germany, but since his ressidence in America he joined the Evangelical Lutheran
church, of which he was a member till the end came. Three weeks ago his oldest
son, William, died. This was a severe shock to the aged father and his wish was
to follow soon. The Lord fulfilled his wish and called him November 27, 197, at
the age of 87 years, 4 months and 17 days. He leaves six children: John W., of
Grand Rapids, Peter of Colon, Henry of Burr Oak, Henrietta SCHRADER of Colon, Margretta SWEENEY of Trenton, N.J., and one daughter still
in Germany; also thirty eight grandchildren, twenty three great-grandchildren,
and many friends.
